I love this story.  We keep it on our ‘fridge because it’s such a great reminder of the good & evil battle that we all deal with every day and the choice we have to “give thanks in all circumstances”.

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.
He said, “My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all.”
“One is Evil – It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.”
“The other is Good – It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.”
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: “Which wolf wins?”
The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.

Ah, convicts me every time.  And in lieu of what I’m fixing my mind on (feeding), I wrote out a little list in my head of the moments today that I’m thankful for.  Dear God, thank you for:

  • the rain…and seeing a squirrel out my window hiding himself from the rain with his own tail #smartsquirrel
  • watching Sam laugh in his sleep
  • fun times/ real times with other new moms
  • lunch with hubby
  • a clean sink (courtesy of hubby)
  • grass-fed beef
  • Newby eggs 🙂

Gratitude is not something that comes natural, and I guess God knew that when He inspired Paul to pen the words “Rejoice always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thess 5:16-18).  I make God’s will so elusive sometimes, but here it is spelled out for me.  No matter where the moments of my days are or what they are filled with, I can choose to “feed” gratitude because my hope is secure in Christ.  It is not the same as Bob Marley’s feel good mantra “Don’t Worry, Be Happy“, because my circumstances are often not happy.  God does not force me to look at those circumstances and muster up a happy smile, but instead he lifts my head from my circumstances and fixes my eyes on Jesus for real hope in the midst of them.  I really can rejoice always, not because I’m so good at being happy, but because I have a God who I can trust.   #thankyouforJesus.
