“When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”
Is it finished for you? Or do you find yourself still spinning on the wheel of performance? All too often these last words of Jesus slip right on past my consciousness as I go about my hurried agenda for the day with one thing in mind: me. My plans, my reputation, my success, my comfort…[insert perpetual list of selfish pursuits here].
But Jesus’ life stands in direct contrast to selfishness – He is the ultimate example of sacrifice. I cling to my life, Jesus laid his down. And that’s what we celebrate today. That Jesus freed us from our selfishness. That I don’t have to live my life attempting to prove myself anymore. The truest thing about me is that Christ died for me. And with his final, authoritative breath, he proclaimed over my sin and the sin of the world “It is finished.”
There is no room for guilt, “It is finished”
There is no room for regret, “It is finished”
There is no room for performance, “It is finished”
Let us take hold of this promise and cease our striving. I can never be good on my own – Christ is the only truly Good thing about me – the One who makes me white as snow.
Happy Good Friday. He is Good.
